Berkshire (BARK-shər, -⁠sheer; in the 17th century sometimes spelt phonetically as Barkeshire; abbreviated Berks.) is a historic county in South East England. One of the home counties, Berkshire was recognised by Queen Elizabeth II as the Royal County of Berkshire in 1957 because of the presence of Windsor Castle, and letters patent were issued in 1974. Berkshire is a county of historic origin, a ceremonial county and a non-metropolitan county without a county council. The county town is Reading.

The River Thames formed the historic northern boundary, from Buscot in the west to Old Windsor in the east. The historic county, therefore, includes territory that is now administered by the Vale of White Horse and parts of South Oxfordshire in Oxfordshire, but excludes Caversham, Slough and five less populous settlements in the east of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. All the changes mentioned, apart from the tweak to Caversham, took place in 1974. The towns of Abingdon, Didcot, Faringdon, Wallingford and Wantage were transferred to Oxfordshire, the six places joining came from Buckinghamshire.Berkshire County Council was the main local giving out of most areas from 1889 to 1998 and was based in Reading, the county town which had its own County Borough administration (1888–1974).

Since 1998, Berkshire has been governed by the six unitary authorities of Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor and Maidenhead and Wokingham. The ceremonial county borders Oxfordshire to the north, Buckinghamshire to the northeast, Greater London(to the east, Surrey to the southeast, Wiltshire to the west and Hampshire to the south.
No allocation of the county is more than 8.5 miles (13.7 km) from the M4 motorway.

Hampshire (, ; abbreviated to Hants) is a county in South East England on the coast of the English Channel. The county town is Winchester, but the county is named after Southampton. Its two largest cities are Southampton and Portsmouth which are administered separately as unitary authorities; the dismount of the county is governed by a engagement of the Hampshire County Council and non-metropolitan district councils.

First decided about 14,000 years ago, Hampshire’s recorded history dates to Roman Britain, when its chief town was Winchester, then known as Venta Belgarum. The county was recorded in the 11th century Domesday Book, divided into 44 hundreds. From the 12th century, the ports grew in importance, fuelled by trade taking into consideration the continent, wool and cloth manufacture, fishing and large shipbuilding industries. By the 16th century, the population of Southampton had outstripped that of Winchester. By the mid-19th century, the population was 219,210, double that at the initiation of the century, in on top of 86,000 dwellings. Agriculture was the principal industry and 10 per cent of the county was nevertheless forest. Hampshire played a crucial military role in both World Wars. The borders of the ceremonial county were created by the Local Government Act 1972 (enacted 1974). Historically part of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight was made a separate ceremonial county and the towns of Bournemouth and Christchurch were administered as allowance of the ceremonial county of Dorset.

The geography of the county is varied, with upland rising to 286 metres (938 ft) and mostly south-flowing rivers. There are areas of downland and marsh, and two national parks: the New Forest and share of the South Downs, which together cover 45 per cent of Hampshire.

Greater London is an administrative Place in England governed by the Greater London Authority, and a ceremonial county that covers the thesame area, with the exception of the City of London, which forms a surgically remove ceremonial county. The administrative area, which has the thesame extent as the London Region, is organised into 33 local admin districts: the 32 London boroughs and the City of London. The Greater London Authority, based in Newham as of the start of 2024, is answerable for strategic local organization across the Place and consists of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

Greater London was first conventional in 1965 as a sui generis council Place and ceremonial county below the Greater London Council on 1 April 1965 through the London Government Act 1963. The GLC was abolished in 1986. In 1994, the Place was customary as a government office region called “London”. The Greater London Authority was formed in 2000.

The region covers 1,572 km (607 sq mi) and had a population of 8,174,000 at the 2011 census. In 2018 the estimated population surpassed 9 million. Other areas, such as the London metropolitan area and Greater London Urban Area, are used in some national statistics for London, including areas uncovered this administrative region.

Greater London lacks any formal recognised city status in the UK, though two local authorities within the region, the City of Westminster and the City of London, have this status, and the wider metropolis of London is generally referred to as a city.

As a ceremonial county, Greater London has a Lord-Lieutenant and a High Sheriff, both appointed by the British monarch, but Greater London is not one of England’s historic counties. Greater London is split in the middle of parts of the historic counties of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.

Before the UK seceded from the European Union in 2020 after Brexit, Greater London had plus been a regional constituency of the European Parliament, known generally as “London”.

Somerset (;archaically Somersetshire) is a county in South West England which borders Gloucestershire and Bristol to the north, Wiltshire to the east, Dorset to the south-east and Devon to the south-west. It is bounded to the north and west by the Severn Estuary and the Bristol Channel, its coastline facing southeastern Wales. Its customary border as soon as Gloucestershire is the River Avon. Somerset is currently formed of six council areas, of which two are unitary authorities, until the four second-tier district councils are merged on 1 April 2024, after which the county will comprise three unitary authorities. Its county town is Taunton.

Somerset is a rural county of rolling hills, the Blackdown Hills, Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills and Exmoor National Park, and large flat expanses of house including the Somerset Levels. There is evidence of human occupation from Paleolithic times, and of subsequent treaty by the Celts, Romans and Anglo-Saxons. The county played a significant allocation in Alfred the Great‘s rise to power, and far ahead the English Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion. The city of Bath is famous for its Georgian architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cheshire, archaically the County Palatine of Chester, is a historic and ceremonial county (the two in the same way as differing boundaries) in North West England. It is bordered by the counties of Merseyside and Greater Manchester to the north, Derbyshire to the east, Staffordshire and Shropshire to the south, and Wales to the west. Cheshire’s county town is the cathedral city of Chester, while its largest town by population is Warrington. Other towns in the county include Alsager, Congleton, Crewe, Ellesmere Port, Knutsford, Macclesfield, Middlewich, Nantwich, Neston, Northwich, Poynton, Runcorn, Sandbach, Widnes, Wilmslow and Winsford.
