The Vale of Glamorgan (Welsh: Bro Morgannwg [ˈbroː mɔrˈɡanʊɡ]), often referred to as The Vale, is a county borough in the south-east of Wales. It borders Bridgend County Borough to the west, Cardiff to the east, Rhondda Cynon Taf to the north, and the Bristol Channel to the south. With an economy based largely upon agriculture and chemicals, it is the southernmost unitary authority in Wales. Attractions include Barry Island Pleasure Park, the Barry Tourist Railway, Medieval wall paintings in St Cadoc’s Church, Llancarfan, Porthkerry Park, St Donat’s Castle, Cosmeston Lakes Country Park and Cosmeston Medieval Village. The largest town is Barry. Other towns include Penarth, Llantwit Major, and Cowbridge. There are many villages in the county borough.

Cumbria ( KUM-bree-ə) is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in North West England, bordering Scotland. The county and Cumbria County Council, its local government, came into existence in 1974 after the alleyway of the Local Government Act 1972. Cumbria’s county town is Carlisle, in the north of the county. The only supplementary major urban area is Barrow-in-Furness on the south-western tip of the county.

The administrative county of Cumbria consists of six districts (Allerdale, Barrow-in-Furness, Carlisle, Copeland, Eden and South Lakeland) and, in 2019, had a population of 500,012 residents. Cumbria is one of the most sparsely populated counties in England, with 73.4 people per km (190/sq mi). On 1 April 2024, the administrative county of Cumbria would be abolished and replaced once two extra unitary authorities; Westmorland and Furness (Barrow-in-Furness, Eden, South Lakeland) and Cumberland (Allerdale, Carlisle, Copeland).

Cumbria is the third largest ceremonial county in England by area. It is bounded to the north-east by Northumberland, the east by County Durham,
the south-east by North Yorkshire, the south by Lancashire, the west by the Irish Sea, the north-west by the Scottish council areas of Dumfries and Galloway, and the north by Scottish Borders.

Cumbria is predominantly rural and contains the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered one of England’s finest areas of natural beauty, serving as inspiration for visual artists, writers and musicians. A large area of the south-east of the county is within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, while the east of the county fringes the North Pennines AONB. Much of Cumbria is mountainous and it contains every peak in England higher than 3,000 feet (910 m) above sea level, with the summit of Scafell Pike at 3,209 feet (978 m) being the highest narrowing in England. An upland, coastal and rural area, Cumbria’s chronicles is characterised by invasions, migration and settlement, as competently as battles and skirmishes between the English and the Scots. Notable historic sites in Cumbria include Carlisle Castle, Furness Abbey, Hardknott Roman Fort, Brough Castle and Hadrian’s Wall (also a World Heritage Site).

Devon (, archaically known as Devonshire) is a county in South West England, reaching from the Bristol Channel in the north to the English Channel in the south. It is bounded by Cornwall to the west, Somerset to the north-east and Dorset to the east. The city of Exeter is the county town. The county includes the districts of East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge and West Devon. Plymouth and Torbay are each geographically allowance of Devon, but are administered as unitary authorities. Combined as a ceremonial county, Devon’s Place is 6,707 km² (2,590 square miles) and its population is practically 1.2 million.

Devon derives its read out from Dumnonia (the shift from m to v is a typical Celtic consonant shift). During the British Iron Age, Roman Britain and the into the future Middle Ages, this was the homeland of the Dumnonii Brittonic Celts. The Anglo-Saxon treaty of Britain resulted in the partial incorporation of Dumnonia into the Kingdom of Wessex during the eighth and ninth centuries. The western boundary gone Cornwall was set at the River Tamar by King Æthelstan in 936. Devon was sophisticated constituted as a shire of the Kingdom of England.

South Yorkshire is a ceremonial and metropolitan county governed as a combined authority in north-central England. It had a population of 1.34 million in 2011 and has an area of 1,552 square kilometres (599 sq mi). The county consists of four metropolitan boroughs—the City of Sheffield and the boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham—collectively administered by a directly-elected mayor.

Lying on the east side of the Pennines, South Yorkshire is landlocked, and borders Derbyshire to the west and south-west, West Yorkshire to the north-west, North Yorkshire to the north, the East Riding of Yorkshire to the north-east, Lincolnshire to the east and Nottinghamshire to the south-east. The largest deal is Sheffield, its built-up area is the tenth most populous in the United Kingdom. With greater than half of the county’s population active within the built-up area, it dominates the county’s western half.

South Yorkshire was created on 1 April 1974 hence of the Local Government Act 1972. It was created from 32 local processing districts of the West Riding of Yorkshire (the administrative county and four independent county boroughs), with small areas from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. South Yorkshire County Council was abolished in 1986 and its metropolitan boroughs effectively becoming unitary authorities, although the metropolitan county continues to exist in law.

Shropshire (; alternatively Salop; abbreviated in print forlorn as Shrops; demonym Salopian sə-LOH-pee-ən) is a landlocked historic county in the West Midlands region of England. It is bordered by Wales to the west and the English counties of Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the southeast, and Herefordshire to the south. A unitary authority of the thesame name was created in 2009, taking more than from the previous county council and five district councils, now governed by Shropshire Council. The borough of Telford and Wrekin has been a sever unitary authority past 1998, but remains part of the ceremonial county.

The county’s population and economy is centred on five towns: the county town of Shrewsbury, which is culturally and historically important and close to the centre of the county;Telford, which was founded as a extra town in the east which was constructed around a number of older towns, most notably Wellington, Dawley and Madeley, which is today the most populous;Oswestry in the northwest, Bridgnorth to the south of Telford, and Ludlow in the south. The county has eighteen market towns, including Whitchurch in the north, Newport near Telford, and Market Drayton in the northeast.

The Ironbridge Gorge area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering Ironbridge, Coalbrookdale and a share of Madeley. There are supplementary historic industrial sites in the county, such as at Shrewsbury, Broseley, Snailbeach and Highley, as skillfully as the Shropshire Union Canal.

The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers roughly a quarter of the county, mainly in the south. Shropshire is one of England’s most rural and sparsely populated counties, with a population density of 136/km (350/sq mi). The Wrekin is one of the most well-known natural landmarks in the county, though the highest hills are the Clee Hills, Stiperstones and the Long Mynd. Wenlock Edge is option significant geographical and geological landmark. In the low-lying northwest of the county overlapping the border with Wales is the Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve, one of the most important and best preserved bogs in Britain. The River Severn, Great Britain’s longest river, runs through the county, exiting into Worcestershire by the Severn Valley.

The county flower is the round-leaved sundew.

Greater London is an administrative area in England governed by the Greater London Authority, and a ceremonial county that covers the thesame area, with the exception of the City of London, which forms a surgically remove ceremonial county. The administrative area, which has the thesame extent as the London Region, is organised into 33 local paperwork districts: the 32 London boroughs and the City of London. The Greater London Authority, based in Newham as of the start of 2024, is liable for strategic local meting out across the Place and consists of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

Greater London was first received in 1965 as a sui generis council Place and ceremonial county below the Greater London Council on 1 April 1965 through the London Government Act 1963. The GLC was abolished in 1986. In 1994, the area was time-honored as a government office region called “London”. The Greater London Authority was formed in 2000.

The region covers 1,572 km (607 sq mi) and had a population of 8,174,000 at the 2011 census. In 2018 the estimated population surpassed 9 million. Other areas, such as the London metropolitan area and Greater London Urban Area, are used in some national statistics for London, including areas external this administrative region.
