Essex is a county in the East of England. One of the home counties, it borders Suffolk and Cambridgeshire to the north, the North Sea to the east, Hertfordshire to the west, Kent across the estuary of the River Thames to the south, and Greater London to the south and south-west. The county town is Chelmsford, which is one of two cities in the county, the extra being Southend-on-Sea which was approved city status on 1 March 2024. Colchester will become a city innovative in 2024 as allowance of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. For the purposes of dispensation statistics, Essex is placed in the East of England region.

There are four definitions of the extent of Essex, the widest monster the ancient county. Next largest is the former postal county, followed by the ceremonial county, with the smallest mammal the administrative county—the area administered by the County Council, which excludes the two unitary authorities of Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea, and the areas administered by the Greater London Authority.

The ceremonial county occupies the eastern allocation of what was, during the Early Middle Ages, the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex. Devon (, archaically known as Devonshire) is a county in South West England, reaching from the Bristol Channel in the north to the English Channel in the south. It is bounded by Cornwall to the west, Somerset to the north-east and Dorset to the east. The city of Exeter is the county town. The county includes the districts of East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge and West Devon. Plymouth and Torbay are each geographically ration of Devon, but are administered as unitary authorities. Combined as a ceremonial county, Devon’s area is 6,707 km (2,590 square miles) and its population is nearly 1.2 million.

Devon derives its say from Dumnonia (the shift from m to v is a typical Celtic consonant shift). During the British Iron Age, Roman Britain and the early Middle Ages, this was the homeland of the Dumnonii Brittonic Celts. The Anglo-Saxon agreement of Britain resulted in the partial immersion of Dumnonia into the Kingdom of Wessex during the eighth and ninth centuries. The western boundary with Cornwall was set at the River Tamar by King Æthelstan in 936. Devon was cutting edge constituted as a shire of the Kingdom of England.

The north and south coasts of Devon each have both cliffs and sandy shores, and the county’s bays contain seaside resorts, fishing towns and ports. The inland terrain is rural, generally hilly and has a demean population density than many other parts of England. Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England, at 954 km (368 square miles); its moorland extends across a large expanse of granite bedrock. To the north of Dartmoor are the Culm Measures and Exmoor. In the valleys and lowlands of south and east Devon the soil is more fertile, drained by rivers including the Exe, the Culm, the Teign, the Dart and the Otter.

Oxfordshire is a landlocked county in the far afield west of the processing statistical region of South East England. The ceremonial county borders Warwickshire to the north-west, Northamptonshire to the north-east, Buckinghamshire to the east, Berkshire to the south, Wiltshire to the south-west and Gloucestershire to the west.

Greater London is an administrative area in England governed by the Greater London Authority, and a ceremonial county that covers the similar area, with the exception of the City of London, which forms a separate ceremonial county. The administrative area, which has the thesame extent as the London Region, is organised into 33 local admin districts: the 32 London boroughs and the City of London. The Greater London Authority, based in Newham as of the start of 2024, is blamed for strategic local dispensation across the area and consists of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

Greater London was first conventional in 1965 as a sui generis council Place and ceremonial county under the Greater London Council on 1 April 1965 through the London Government Act 1963. The GLC was abolished in 1986. In 1994, the Place was expected as a government office region called “London”. The Greater London Authority was formed in 2000.

The region covers 1,572 km (607 sq mi) and had a population of 8,174,000 at the 2011 census. In 2018 the estimated population surpassed 9 million. Other areas, such as the London metropolitan area and Greater London Urban Area, are used in some national statistics for London, including areas outside this administrative region.

Greater London lacks any formal recognised city status in the UK, though two local authorities within the region, the City of Westminster and the City of London, have this status, and the wider metropolis of London is generally referred to as a city.

The East Riding of Yorkshire, or simply East Riding or East Yorkshire, is a ceremonial county in Northern England.
