Gloucestershire ( abbreviated Glos) is a county in South West England. The county comprises portion of the Cotswold Hills, part of the flat fertile valley of the River Severn and the entire Forest of Dean.

The county town is the city of Gloucester and extra principal towns include Cheltenham, Stroud, Tewkesbury, Cirencester, Dursley, Cinderford and Lydney.

Gloucestershire borders Herefordshire to the north-west, Worcestershire to the north, Warwickshire to the north-east, Oxfordshire to the east, Wiltshire to the south, Bristol and Somerset to the south-west, and the Welsh county of Monmouthshire to the west.

The current Gloucestershire County Council area does not have the similar geographical boundaries as the historic county. Some northern parts of the county, including Long Marston and Welford-on-Avon, were transferred to Warwickshire in 1931. Following the Local Government Act 1972, some southern parts of the county were transferred to the new county of Avon, which ceased to exist on 1 April 1996. After 1996, the city of Bristol and South Gloucestershire became separate unitary authorities.

Greater London is an administrative area in England governed by the Greater London Authority, and a ceremonial county that covers the thesame area, with the exception of the City of London, which forms a surgically remove ceremonial county. The administrative area, which has the same extent as the London Region, is organised into 33 local executive districts: the 32 London boroughs and the City of London. The Greater London Authority, based in Newham as of the start of 2024, is liable for strategic local supervision across the Place and consists of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

Greater London was first normal in 1965 as a sui generis council area and ceremonial county below the Greater London Council upon 1 April 1965 through the London Government Act 1963. The GLC was abolished in 1986. In 1994, the Place was normal as a management office region called “London”. The Greater London Authority was formed in 2000.

The region covers 1,572 km (607 sq mi) and had a population of 8,174,000 at the 2011 census. In 2018 the estimated population surpassed 9 million. Other areas, such as the London metropolitan area and Greater London Urban Area, are used in some national statistics for London, including areas external this administrative region.

Greater London lacks any formal recognised city status in the UK, though two local authorities within the region, the City of Westminster and the City of London, have this status, and the wider metropolis of London is generally referred to as a city.

As a ceremonial county, Greater London has a Lord-Lieutenant and a High Sheriff, both appointed by the British monarch, but Greater London is not one of England’s historic counties. Greater London is split in the midst of parts of the historic counties of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.

Before the UK seceded from the European Union in 2020 after Brexit, Greater London had furthermore been a regional constituency of the European Parliament, known generally as “London”.

Essex is a county in the East of England. One of the house counties, it borders Suffolk and Cambridgeshire to the north, the North Sea to the east, Hertfordshire to the west, Kent across the estuary of the River Thames to the south, and Greater London to the south and south-west. The county town is Chelmsford, which is one of two cities in the county, the supplementary being Southend-on-Sea which was granted city status upon 1 March 2024. Colchester will become a city forward-looking in 2024 as portion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. For the purposes of admin statistics, Essex is placed in the East of England region.

There are four definitions of the extent of Essex, the widest innate the ancient county. Next largest is the former postal county, followed by the ceremonial county, with the smallest instinctive the administrative county—the area administered by the County Council, which excludes the two unitary authorities of Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea, and the areas administered by the Greater London Authority.

The ceremonial county occupies the eastern allowance of what was, during the Early Middle Ages, the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex. As well as rural areas, the county in addition to includes: London Stansted Airport, the further towns of Basildon and Harlow, Lakeside Shopping Centre, the port of Tilbury, and the City of Southend-on-Sea.

Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county and combined authority area in North West England, with a population of 2.8 million; comprising ten metropolitan boroughs: Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. Greater Manchester spans 493 square miles (1,277 km), which as regards covers the territory of the Greater Manchester Built-up Area, the second most populous urban Place in the UK. Greater Manchester is governed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), which consists of diplomatic leaders from each of the ten metropolitan borough councils, plus a directly elected mayor, with responsibility for economic development, regeneration and transport. Andy Burnham is the inaugural Mayor of Greater Manchester, elected in 2017. For the 12 years later 1974, the county had a two-tier system of local government; district councils shared aptitude with the Greater Manchester County Council. The county council was abolished in 1986 and suitably its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) effectively became unitary authority areas. However, the metropolitan county continued to exist in be in and as a geographic frame of reference, and as a ceremonial county, with a Lord Lieutenant and a High Sheriff. Several county-wide facilities were co-ordinated through the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities between 1985 and 2011.

Kent is a county in South East England and one of the house counties. It borders Greater London to the north-west, Surrey to the west and East Sussex to the south-west, and Essex to the north across the estuary of the River Thames; it faces the French department of Pas-de-Calais across the Strait of Dover. The county town is Maidstone. It is the fifth most populous county in England, the most populous non-Metropolitan county and the most populous of the house counties.

Kent was one of the first British territories to be decided by Germanic tribes, most notably the Jutes, following the termination of the Romans.Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, the oldest cathedral in England, has been the seat of the Archbishops of Canterbury in the past the conversion of England to Christianity that began in the 6th century later than Saint Augustine. Rochester Cathedral in Medway is England’s second-oldest cathedral. Located in the middle of London and the Strait of Dover, which separates England from mainland Europe, Kent has been the setting for both encounter and diplomacy, including the Battle of Britain in World War II and the Leeds Castle peace talks of 1978 and 2004.
