Lancashire ( LAN-kə-shər, -⁠sheer; abbreviated Lancs.) is a county in North West England. Lancashire is a historic, ceremonial and non-metropolitan county and the county boundaries differ in the middle of these oscillate forms. Its county town is Lancaster. The non-metropolitan county was created by the Local Government Act 1972 and is administered by the Lancashire County Council and twelve district councils. Its administrative middle is Preston. The ceremonial county has a population of 1,449,300 and an area of 1,189 square miles (3,080 km).

The historic County Palatine of Lancashire included the large cities of Manchester and Liverpool as skillfully as the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas in the Lake District, and had an area of 1,909 square miles (4,940 km). Many of these places still identify strongly once the county, particularly in areas of Greater Manchester (such as Oldham and Bury) where Lancashire is still used as portion of the postal address. The historic county was subject to a significant boundary reform in 1974 which created the current ceremonial county and removed Liverpool and Manchester, and most of their surrounding conurbations, to form the metropolitan and ceremonial counties of Merseyside and Greater Manchester. The cold northern portion of Lancashire in the Lake District, including the Furness Peninsula and Cartmel, was merged following Cumberland and Westmorland to form Cumbria. Lancashire purposeless 709 square miles of home to additional counties – about two fifths of its indigenous area – although it did get some house from the West Riding of Yorkshire.

The history of Lancashire begins once its founding in the 12th century. In the Domesday Book of 1086, some of its lands were treated as part of Yorkshire. The estate that lay surrounded by the Ribble and Mersey, Inter Ripam et Mersam, was included in the returns for Cheshire. Lancashire emerged as a major billboard and industrial region during the Industrial Revolution. Liverpool and Manchester grew into its largest cities, with economies built almost the docks and the cotton mills respectively. These cities dominated global trade and the birth of campaigner industrial capitalism. The county contained several mill towns and the collieries of the Lancashire Coalfield. By the 1830s, approximately 85% of all cotton manufactured worldwide was processed in Lancashire. A number of towns and cities were major cotton mill towns during this time. Blackpool was a middle for tourism for the inhabitants of Lancashire’s mill towns, particularly during wakes week.

Today, the county borders Cumbria to the north, Greater Manchester and Merseyside to the south, and North and West Yorkshire to the east; with a coastline on the Irish Sea to the west. The historic county‘s boundaries remain the thesame as those of the county palatine with Lancaster serving as the county town, and the Duke of Lancaster (i.e. the Queen) exercising sovereignty rights, including the taking office of lords lieutenant in Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county and combined authority area in North West England, with a population of 2.8 million; comprising ten metropolitan boroughs: Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. The county was created upon 1 April 1974, as a upshot of the Local Government Act 1972, and designated a functional city region on 1 April 2011. Greater Manchester is formed of parts of the historic counties of Cheshire, Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Greater Manchester spans 493 square miles (1,277 km), which not far-off off from covers the territory of the Greater Manchester Built-up Area, the second most populous urban Place in the UK. Though geographically landlocked, it is joined to the sea by the Manchester Ship Canal which is still open to shipping in Salford and Trafford. Greater Manchester is governed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), which consists of embassy leaders from each of the ten metropolitan borough councils, plus a directly elected mayor, with responsibility for economic development, regeneration and transport. Andy Burnham is the inaugural Mayor of Greater Manchester, elected in 2017. For the 12 years with 1974, the county had a two-tier system of local government; district councils shared knack with the Greater Manchester County Council. The county council was abolished in 1986 and appropriately its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) effectively became unitary authority areas. However, the metropolitan county continued to exist in comport yourself and as a geographic frame of reference, and as a ceremonial county, with a Lord Lieutenant and a High Sheriff. Several county-wide services were co-ordinated through the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities between 1985 and 2011.

Before the introduction of the metropolitan county, the proclaim for the Place was “South East Lancashire North East Cheshire”(SELNEC). Greater Manchester is an amalgamation of 70 former local organization districts from the former administrative counties of Lancashire, Cheshire, the West Riding of Yorkshire and eight independent county boroughs. Since deindustrialisation in the mid-20th century, Greater Manchester has emerged as a major centre for services, media and digital industries, and is Famous for guitar and dance music and its association football teams.

Devon (, archaically known as Devonshire) is a county in South West England, reaching from the Bristol Channel in the north to the English Channel in the south. The western boundary with Cornwall was set at the River Tamar by King Æthelstan in 936. Devon was progressive constituted as a shire of the Kingdom of England.

The north and south coasts of Devon each have both cliffs and sandy shores, and the county’s bays contain seaside resorts, fishing towns and ports. The inland terrain is rural, generally hilly and has a belittle population density than many additional parts of England. Dartmoor is the largest log on space in southern England, at 954 km (368 square miles); its moorland extends across a large expanse of granite bedrock. To the north of Dartmoor are the Culm Measures and Exmoor. In the valleys and lowlands of south and east Devon the soil is more fertile, drained by rivers including the Exe, the Culm, the Teign, the Dart and the Otter.

As capably as agriculture, much of the economy of Devon is based on tourism. The comparatively smooth climate, coastline and landscape make Devon a destination for recreation and leisure in England. Visitors are particularly attracted to the Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks; its coasts, including the resort towns along the south coast known collectively as the English Riviera; the Jurassic Coast and North Devon’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; and the countryside including the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape.

Surrey is a county in South East England which borders Kent to the east, East Sussex to the southeast, West Sussex to the south, Hampshire to the west, Berkshire to the northwest, and Greater London to the northeast. With roughly 1.2 million people, Surrey is the 12th-most populous English county, the third-most populous home county, after Kent and Essex, and the third-most populous in the Southeast, after Hampshire and Kent.

Surrey is a relatively booming county. It has the highest proportion of woodland of counties in England. It has four horse racing courses, and golf courses including the international competition venue at Wentworth.

Guildford is popularly regarded as the county town, although before 2020 Surrey County Council has been based at Woodhatch Place in Reigate, having before been based at County Hall, Kingston-upon-Thames from 1893 until 2020. Surrey is separated into eleven districts.

Worcestershire ( WUUS-tər-shər, -⁠sheer; written abbreviation: Worcs) is a county in the West Midlands of England. The area that is now Worcestershire was absorbed into the unified Kingdom of England in 927, at which time it was constituted as a county (see History of Worcestershire). Over the centuries the county borders have been modified, but it was not until 1844 that substantial changes were made. This culminated considering the abolition of Worcestershire in 1974 taking into account its northern Place becoming allocation of the West Midlands and the in flames part of the county of Hereford and Worcester. However, in 1998 the county of Hereford and Worcester was abolished and Worcestershire was reconstituted without the northern area, which was ceded to the West Midlands.
