Merseyside ( MUR-zee-syde) is a metropolitan and ceremonial county in North West England, with a population of 1.38 million. It encompasses the metropolitan area centred on both banks of the subjugate reaches of the Mersey Estuary and comprises five metropolitan boroughs: Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton, Wirral and the city of Liverpool. Merseyside, which was created upon 1 April 1974 suitably of the Local Government Act 1972, takes its make known from the River Mersey and sits within the historic counties of Lancashire and Cheshire.

Merseyside spans 249 square miles (645 km) of land. It borders the ceremonial counties of Lancashire (to the north-east), Greater Manchester (to the east), Cheshire (to the south and south-east) and the Irish Sea to the west. North Wales is across the Dee Estuary. There is a mixture of high density urban areas, suburbs, semi-rural and rural locations in Merseyside, but overwhelmingly the estate use is urban. It has a focused central event district, formed by Liverpool City Centre, but Merseyside is afterward a polycentric county when five metropolitan districts, each of which has at least one major town centre and outlying suburbs. The Liverpool Urban Area is the fifth most populous conurbation in England and dominates the geographic middle of the county, while the Birkenhead Urban Area dominates the Wirral Peninsula in the south.

In the 12 years following 1974, the county had a two-tier system of local government; district councils shared power with the Merseyside County Council. The county council was abolished in 1986 and hence its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) are now effectively unitary authority areas. However, the metropolitan county continues to exist in work and as a geographic frame of reference, and several county-wide facilities are co-ordinated by authorities and joint-boards, such as Merseytravel (for public transport), Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the Merseyside Police (for law-enforcement); as a ceremonial county, Merseyside has a Lord Lieutenant and a High Sheriff. As the Lancashire county palatine boundaries remain the thesame as the historic boundaries, the High Sheriff of Merseyside, along like those of Lancashire and Greater Manchester are appointed “within the Duchy and County Palatine of Lancaster”.

The boroughs of Merseyside are joined by the neighbouring borough of Halton in Cheshire to form the Liverpool City Region, which is a local enterprise partnership and combined authority area.

Merseyside is an amalgamation of 22 former local doling out districts from the former administrative counties of Lancashire, Cheshire and six autonomous county boroughs centred on Birkenhead, Bootle, Liverpool, Southport, St Helens and Wallasey.

Greater London is an administrative area in England governed by the Greater London Authority, and a ceremonial county that covers the thesame area, with the exception of the City of London, which forms a separate ceremonial county. The administrative area, which has the thesame extent as the London Region, is organised into 33 local executive districts: the 32 London boroughs and the City of London. The Greater London Authority, based in Newham as of the Begin of 2024, is answerable for strategic local paperwork across the area and consists of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.

Greater London was first usual in 1965 as a sui generis council Place and ceremonial county below the Greater London Council upon 1 April 1965 through the London Government Act 1963. The GLC was abolished in 1986. In 1994, the Place was acknowledged as a presidency office region called “London”. The Greater London Authority was formed in 2000.

Kent is a county in South East England and one of the home counties. It borders Greater London to the north-west, Surrey to the west and East Sussex to the south-west, and Essex to the north across the estuary of the River Thames; it faces the French department of Pas-de-Calais across the Strait of Dover. The county town is Maidstone. It is the fifth most populous county in England, the most populous non-Metropolitan county and the most populous of the house counties.

Kent was one of the first British territories to be contracted by Germanic tribes, most notably the Jutes, following the termination of the Romans.Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, the oldest cathedral in England, has been the chair of the Archbishops of Canterbury since the conversion of England to Christianity that began in the 6th century with Saint Augustine. Rochester Cathedral in Medway is England’s second-oldest cathedral. Located in the midst of London and the Strait of Dover, which separates England from mainland Europe, Kent has been the air for both case and diplomacy, including the Battle of Britain in World War II and the Leeds Castle peace talks of 1978 and 2004.

Lancashire ( LAN-kə-shər, -⁠sheer; abbreviated Lancs.) is a county in North West England. Lancashire is a historic, ceremonial and non-metropolitan county and the county boundaries differ amongst these different forms. Its county town is Lancaster. The non-metropolitan county was created by the Local Government Act 1972 and is administered by the Lancashire County Council and twelve district councils. Its administrative centre is Preston. The ceremonial county has a population of 1,449,300 and an Place of 1,189 square miles (3,080 km).

The historic County Palatine of Lancashire included the large cities of Manchester and Liverpool as well as the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas in the Lake District, and had an Place of 1,909 square miles (4,940 km). Many of these places still identify strongly when the county, particularly in areas of Greater Manchester (such as Oldham and Bury) where Lancashire is still used as share of the postal address. The historic county was subject to a significant boundary reform in 1974 which created the current ceremonial county and removed Liverpool and Manchester, and most of their surrounding conurbations, to form the metropolitan and ceremonial counties of Merseyside and Greater Manchester. The standoffish northern share of Lancashire in the Lake District, including the Furness Peninsula and Cartmel, was merged later than Cumberland and Westmorland to form Cumbria. Lancashire floating 709 square miles of house to supplementary counties – about two fifths of its native area – although it did get some home from the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Hampshire (, /-ʃɪər/ (listen); abbreviated to Hants) is a county in South East England on the coast of the English Channel. The county town is Winchester, but the county is named after Southampton. Its two largest cities are Southampton and Portsmouth which are administered separately as unitary authorities; the land of the county is governed by a incorporation of the Hampshire County Council and non-metropolitan district councils.

First approved about 14,000 years ago, Hampshire’s recorded records dates to Roman Britain, when its chief town was Winchester, then known as Venta Belgarum. The county was recorded in the 11th century Domesday Book, divided into 44 hundreds. From the 12th century, the ports grew in importance, fuelled by trade when the continent, wool and cloth manufacture, fishing and large shipbuilding industries. By the 16th century, the population of Southampton had outstripped that of Winchester. By the mid-19th century, the population was 219,210, double that at the beginning of the century, in over 86,000 dwellings. Agriculture was the principal industry and 10 per cent of the county was nevertheless forest. Hampshire played a crucial military role in both World Wars. The borders of the ceremonial county were created by the Local Government Act 1972 (enacted 1974). Historically part of Hampshire, the Isle of Wight was made a separate ceremonial county and the towns of Bournemouth and Christchurch were administered as part of the ceremonial county of Dorset.

Bristol is a city, ceremonial county and unitary authority in England. Situated on the River Avon, it is bordered by the ceremonial counties of Gloucestershire to the north and Somerset to the south. Bristol is the most populous city in South West England.
The wider Bristol Built-up Area is the eleventh most populous urban Place in the United Kingdom.

Iron Age hillforts and Roman villas were built close the confluence of the rivers Frome and Avon. Around the introduction of the 11th century, the agreement was known as Brycgstow (Old English: ‘the place at the bridge’). Bristol acknowledged a royal charter in 1155 and was historically divided between Gloucestershire and Somerset until 1373 taking into account it became a county corporate. From the 13th to the 18th century, Bristol was in the middle of the summit three English cities, after London, in tax receipts.

Bristol was a starting place for further on voyages of exploration to the New World. On a ship out of Bristol in 1497, John Cabot, a Venetian, became the first European to land upon mainland North America. In 1499, William Weston, a Bristol merchant, was the first Englishman to plus an exploration to North America. At the pinnacle of the Bristol slave trade, from 1700 to 1807, more than 2,000 slave ships carried an estimated 500,000 people from Africa to slavery in the Americas. The Port of Bristol has previously moved from Bristol Harbour in the city centre to the Severn Estuary at Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Dock.

Bristol’s enlightened economy is built on the creative media, electronics and aerospace industries; the city-centre docks have been redeveloped as centres of lineage and culture. The city has the largest circulating community currency in the UK, the Bristol Pound, which is pegged to the pound sterling. The city has two universities: the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. There are a variety of artistic and sporting organisations and venues including the Royal West of England Academy, the Arnolfini, Spike Island, Ashton Gate and the Memorial Stadium. It is amalgamated to London and supplementary major UK cities by road and rail, and to the world by sea and air: road, by the M5 and M4 (which attach to the city middle by the Portway and M32); rail, via Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway mainline rail stations; and Bristol Airport.

Bristol was named the best city in Britain in which to bring to life in 2014 and 2017; it won the European Green Capital Award in 2015.
