Suffolk is a ceremonial county of England in East Anglia. It borders Norfolk to the north, Cambridgeshire to the west and Essex to the south; the North Sea lies to the east. The county town is Ipswich; other important towns include Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, and Felixstowe which has one of the largest container ports in Europe.

The county is low-lying but can be quite hilly, especially towards the west. It is as well as known for its extensive crop growing and has largely arable home with the wetlands of the Broads in the north. The Suffolk Coast & Heaths and Dedham Vale are both nationally designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county and collection authority area in North West England, with a population of 2.8 million; comprising ten metropolitan boroughs: Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. The county was created on 1 April 1974, as a upshot of the Local Government Act 1972, and designated a functioning city region upon 1 April 2011. Greater Manchester is formed of parts of the historic counties of Cheshire, Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Greater Manchester spans 493 square miles (1,277 km), which as regards covers the territory of the Greater Manchester Built-up Area, the second most populous urban area in the UK. Though geographically landlocked, it is associated to the sea by the Manchester Ship Canal which is yet open to shipping in Salford and Trafford. Greater Manchester borders the ceremonial counties of Cheshire (to the south-west and south), Derbyshire (to the south-east), West Yorkshire (to the north-east), Lancashire (to the north) and Merseyside (to the west). There is a combination of high-density urban areas, suburbs, semi-rural and rural locations in Greater Manchester, but land use is mostly urban—the product of concentric urbanisation and industrialisation which occurred mostly during the 19th century subsequent to the region flourished as the global middle of the cotton industry. It has a focused central event district, formed by Manchester city centre and the adjoining city of Salford and Borough of Trafford, but Greater Manchester is in addition to a polycentric county gone ten metropolitan districts, each district is concentrated in this area a large town or a city (Manchester and Salford mammal the without help cities). These districts contain suburbs, towns and villages for each city and town.

Greater Manchester is governed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), which consists of embassy leaders from each of the ten metropolitan borough councils, plus a directly elected mayor, with liability for economic development, regeneration and transport. Andy Burnham is the inaugural Mayor of Greater Manchester, elected in 2017. For the 12 years afterward 1974, the county had a two-tier system of local government; district councils shared capability with the Greater Manchester County Council. The county council was abolished in 1986 and therefore its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) effectively became unitary authority areas. However, the metropolitan county continued to exist in put it on and as a geographic frame of reference, and as a ceremonial county, with a Lord Lieutenant and a High Sheriff. Several county-wide facilities were co-ordinated through the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities in the middle of 1985 and 2011.

Cannock Chase AONB is within the county as well as parts of the National Forest and the Peak District national park.

Wolverhampton, Walsall, West Bromwich, and Smethwick are within the historic county boundaries of Staffordshire, but previously 1974 have been ration of the West Midlands county.

Apart from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire is not speaking into the districts of Cannock Chase, East Staffordshire, Lichfield, Newcastle-under-Lyme, South Staffordshire, Stafford, Staffordshire Moorlands, and Tamworth.

Lancashire ( LAN-kə-shər, -⁠sheer; abbreviated Lancs.) is a county in North West England. Lancashire is a historic, ceremonial and non-metropolitan county and the county boundaries differ amid these substitute forms. Its county town is Lancaster. The non-metropolitan county was created by the Local Government Act 1972 and is administered by the Lancashire County Council and twelve district councils. Its administrative centre is Preston. The ceremonial county has a population of 1,449,300 and an area of 1,189 square miles (3,080 km).

The historic County Palatine of Lancashire included the large cities of Manchester and Liverpool as well as the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas in the Lake District, and had an Place of 1,909 square miles (4,940 km). Many of these places yet identify strongly subsequently the county, particularly in areas of Greater Manchester (such as Oldham and Bury) where Lancashire is yet used as portion of the postal address. The historic county was subject to a significant boundary reform in 1974 which created the current ceremonial county and removed Liverpool and Manchester, and most of their surrounding conurbations, to form the metropolitan and ceremonial counties of Merseyside and Greater Manchester. The proud northern share of Lancashire in the Lake District, including the Furness Peninsula and Cartmel, was merged later Cumberland and Westmorland to form Cumbria. Lancashire aimless 709 square miles of land to additional counties – about two fifths of its indigenous area – although it did gain some estate from the West Riding of Yorkshire.

The history of Lancashire begins afterward its founding in the 12th century. In the Domesday Book of 1086, some of its lands were treated as portion of Yorkshire. The house that lay along with the Ribble and Mersey, Inter Ripam et Mersam, was included in the returns for Cheshire. Lancashire emerged as a major poster and industrial region during the Industrial Revolution. Liverpool and Manchester grew into its largest cities, with economies built in this area the docks and the cotton mills respectively. These cities dominated global trade and the birth of modern industrial capitalism. The county contained several mill towns and the collieries of the Lancashire Coalfield. By the 1830s, approximately 85% of all cotton manufactured worldwide was processed in Lancashire. A number of towns and cities were major cotton mill towns during this time. Blackpool was a middle for tourism for the inhabitants of Lancashire’s mill towns, particularly during wakes week.

Today, the county borders Cumbria to the north, Greater Manchester and Merseyside to the south, and North and West Yorkshire to the east; with a coastline upon the Irish Sea to the west. The historic county‘s boundaries remain the thesame as those of the county palatine with Lancaster serving as the county town, and the Duke of Lancaster (i.e. the Queen) exercising sovereignty rights, including the consent of lords lieutenant in Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

South Yorkshire is a ceremonial and metropolitan county governed as a combined authority in north-central England. It had a population of 1.34 million in 2011 and has an Place of 1,552 square kilometres (599 sq mi). The county consists of four metropolitan boroughs—the City of Sheffield and the boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham—collectively administered by a directly-elected mayor.

Lying upon the east side of the Pennines, South Yorkshire is landlocked, and borders Derbyshire to the west and south-west, West Yorkshire to the north-west, North Yorkshire to the north, the East Riding of Yorkshire to the north-east, Lincolnshire to the east and Nottinghamshire to the south-east. The largest harmony is Sheffield, its built-up area is the tenth most populous in the United Kingdom. With higher than half of the county’s population bustling within the built-up area, it dominates the county’s western half.

South Yorkshire was created on 1 April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972. It was created from 32 local government districts of the West Riding of Yorkshire (the administrative county and four independent county boroughs), with small areas from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. South Yorkshire County Council was abolished in 1986 and its metropolitan boroughs effectively becoming unitary authorities, although the metropolitan county continues to exist in law.

As a ceremonial county, South Yorkshire has a Lord Lieutenant and a High Sheriff. The Place lies within the Sheffield City Region local enterprise partnership with Barnsley then being within the Leeds City Region, reflecting its geographical viewpoint midway in the middle of the cities.

In 2024, Doncaster became one of eight towns to successfully bid for city status and will be the second city (after Sheffield) in the county. This would goal the county will have two cities (Doncaster and Sheffield) and two boroughs (Barnsley and Rotherham).
